An antibiotic commonly against to act towards a variety of serious infections may also facilitate balk dementia in HIV patients, according to a test-tube study of benignant thought cells by Johns Hopkins University Faction of Nostrum neurologist Jeffrey Rumbaugh, M.D., Ph.D.

Rumbaugh added that, although ceftriaxone is FDA approved and could be used at any time by patients suffering from HIV dementia, there is not yet enough data to support doing so.

The study looked at two proteins, called Tat and gp120, that are part of the virus that causes HIV infection and that are implicated in the development of HIV dementia, according to Dr. Rumbaugh, the study’s lead author. HIV is the only virus that makes Tat and gp120, which are produced during its normal life cycle, though other viruses make similar proteins. Dementia is a common side effect of long-term HIV infection, but there are no known specific treatments for this complication. According to Rumbaugh, Tat and gp120 are believed to cause dementia by reducing the expression of a brain chemical called EAAT-2 (excitatory amino acid transporter-2). EAAT-2 absorbs the neurotransmitter glutamate from the space between neurons (the synapse), thereby preventing excess neuronal excitation, which in turn can cause cell death and brain damage.

Ceftriaxone, used to treat pneumonias, sexually transmitted diseases, bacterial meningitis and other infections, is a known stimulator of EAAT-2 expression and protects against neuronal injury in mice with nervous system disorders. To test ceftriaxone’s potential in HIV, Rumbaugh and colleagues grew human neuronal cell cultures in a lab from existing human neuron cell lines, treated them with a range of doses of ceftriaxone, and exposed them to Tat or gp120. They found that the antibiotic protected the neurons against both HIV proteins. The dose of ceftriaxone needed for protection was well within the range currently used for treatment of bacterial infections.

“These results indicated that this class of drugs may prove effective in treating HIV patients with dementia,” Rumbaugh says.

About 500,000 people in the United States alone have HIV dementia. And although new cases of HIV dementia have declined over the last 10 years (due to the increased availability of effective HIV treatments), the prevalence of HIV dementia is on the rise since people are living longer with HIV.

“We hope this research might help many patients with other forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s, and infections of the brain, like herpes encephalitis and West Nile encephalitis,” says Rumbaugh. “However, it will require a lot more development before drugs like these can be used even to treat patients with HIV dementia, let alone to treat patients with other neurological diseases.”

This move is part of the UK beer industry’s drive to support the Government’s alcohol harm reduction strategy.

In a survey of major brewers, the British Beer and Pub Association came to the decision that 85 per cent of canned and bottled beer would be unit-labelled by the end of this year, while messages to encourage responsible drinking will appear on 84 per cent of the products.

Of Britain’s 17 major brewers many have already launched the labelling scheme.

Latest Government guidelines recommend a limit of two to three units per day for women and three to four for men.

The British Beer and Pub Association says that bottled and canned beer represents 44 per cent of all beer sold in Britain.

Researchers at the University of Utah are enrolling people in a new clinical trial that uses a patient’s own develop cells to behave ischemic and non-ischemic concern nonentity.

The one-year Cardiac Repair Cell Treatment of Patients with Dilated Cardiomyopathy (IMPACT-DCM) study will look at the safety of injecting Cardiac Repair Cells (CRC) and their ability to improve heart function.

Patients enrolled in IMPACT-DCM will have their own bone marrow cells drawn (about 3 tablespoons worth), which will then be grown in a culture to expand the number of cells that will help the heart muscle and improve blood flow. Two weeks later, the patient’s stem cells will be injected directly into the left ventricle of the heart during a minimally invasive surgery developed by Amit N. Patel, M.D., national principal investigator for the IMPACT-DCM trial and director of cardiovascular regenerative medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine.

“Heart failure affects about 5 million Americans, with more than half a million new cases diagnosed each year. A subset of these patients has dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a condition that leaves the heart weakened, enlarged and unable to pump blood efficiently. For most of these patients, the only option has been a heart transplant,” said David A. Bull, M.D., professor and division chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the U’s medical school and site principal investigator for the trial.

“This is the first trial of its kind in the United States, providing patients who have limited to no other options with a viable treatment,” said Patel, professor of surgery. “By using a patient’s own cells, we eliminate the concern of rejection and the need for potentially harmful immunosuppressive drugs. We hope these cells will help with new blood vessels and support the heart muscle in order to improve the heart’s function, thereby greatly improving the patient’s quality of life.”

Patients who have been diagnosed with congestive heart failure (NYHA Class 3 or 4) and are between the ages of 18 and 86 may be eligible to participate in the trial. The University of Utah is one of five nationwide sites conducting the IMPACT-DCM study, sponsored by Aastrom Biosciences, Inc., a company specializing in autologous cell products. IMPACT-DCM is a randomized, controlled, Phase II study that will enroll 40 patients nationwide: 20 patients with ischemic DCM and 20 patients with nonischemic DCM.

A University of Iowa researcher and colleagues at the University of Michigan have discovered a direct link between disruption of a critical cellular housekeeping process and fatty liver disease, a condition that causes beefy to accumulate in the liver.

The findings, published in the Dec. 9 issue of the journal Developmental Cell, potency untie immature avenues for understanding and dialect mayhap treating fatty liver illness, which is the most base genre of liver disease in the Western give birth to and may alter as many as united in three American adults. Although fatty liver itself does not not justification sickness, it is associated with serious conditions in the same way as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cirrhosis of the liver and liver loss.

The study, led by Tom Rutkowski, Ph.D., hang out with professor of anatomy and cell biology at the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and Randal Kaufman, Ph.D., professor of biological chemistry and internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, shows that disrupted protein folding causes fatty liver in mice. The decree is the first to demonstrate a uninterrupted link between this form of cellular stress and odd well-to-do metabolism.

Protein folding, which occurs in a cellular cell called the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), is a vital cellular process because proteins must be correctly folded into defined three-dimensional shapes in call for to function. Unfolded or misfolded proteins are a cartouche of cellular stress and can cause grave problems — misfolded proteins cause amyloid plaques ground in Alzheimer’s disease. Cells rely on a terribly sensitive system known as the unfolded protein feedback (UPR) to defend against the cellular stress caused by protein folding problems.

To investigate how cells adapt to stress, the researchers created mice that were missing one component of the UPR. Under sane conditions, mice with the genetic mutation looked and behaved normally. Putting, the mutated mice were much less skilful to cope with cellular stress caused by disrupted protein folding than romantic-type mice. In addition, the body found that protein misfolding caused fatty liver in mice with the mutation.

“We did not suggest out to advised fatty liver disease,” said Rutkowski, who was a postdoctoral researcher in Kaufman’s University of Michigan lab when the library was done. “We were really vexing to understand the underlying biology of how cells respond to stress, and auspices of our course to that basic ask we were talented to identify a connection to a qualification that is of enormous importance to human salubriousness.

“When we realized that our experiments to investigate protein folding abnormalities were producing fatty liver disease as a consequence, it tied in with aforementioned deduced bear witness suggesting that ER stress might be involved in the liver’s part in sebaceous metabolism,” he added.

The researchers followed up on the result and bring about that mice also developed fatty liver if their ability to up proteins in the ER was genetically impaired, undisturbed when the UPR was functionally intact. This result suggested that the UPR is able to protect the liver against ER stress to a certain degree, but that fatty liver will fruit when the stress is too severe.

Above analysis of the mice models identified some of the genes that relate prolonged ER tension with faulty obese metabolism in the liver. In finicky, the team ground that unresolved ER stress leads to persistent sensitivity of a gene called CHOP and that leads to changes in expression of fat metabolism genes. Mice with no CHOP were partially protected from fatty liver.

The results suggest that it is not disruption of a fixed protein that caused fatty liver, but kind of anything that perturbs the ER’s ability to go out of business proteins correctly that is important. If this find holds true for fatty liver disease in humans, therapies aimed at improving protein folding in the ER, or inhibiting CHOP, could help handle the condition.

“Our study does prove that perturbing protein folding can lead to fatty liver,” Rutkowski said. “The next step is to investigate whether licit physiological stresses with chronic alcohol consumption, rotundity and viral infection also principal to fatty liver contagion through protein folding problems in the ER.”

In addition to Rutkowski and Kaufman, who also is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, key members of the research team included Jun Wu, Ph.D., who was a graduate swotter at University of Michigan Medical Center, and Mahmood Hussain, Ph.D., at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. Researchers from the University of Michigan Medical Center; the University of Washington, Seattle, Wash.; and Wayne Royal University, Detroit, Mich., also were involved in the study.

Retail clinics are less expensive for patients than care received in a physician’s office or an tenacious be concerned clinic, but there is not yet evidence that their increased from has led to a reduction in overall form care costs, according to a study in Minnesota published on Tuesday in the journal Fettle Affairs, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

For the study, Marcus Thygeson, an associate medical director at Minneapolis-based HealthPartners, and colleagues examined 628,513 episodes of care, 3.2% of which occurred at MinuteClinic facilities, for members between 2003 and 2006. Researchers determined the overall cost per episode of care, which included the cost of a medical examination and laboratory and pharmacy costs, for five conditions — sore throats, ear infections, sinus infections, conjunctivitis and urinary tract infections. Researchers compared the overall cost per episode of care that occurred in 2003, before MinuteClinic became part of the HealthPartners network, with those that occurred from 2004 to 2006.

The study found that the overall cost per episode of care for the five conditions increased by 14.1% during the four-year period. The average cost per episode of care for the five conditions increased by 20.3% in emergency departments, 12.7% in physician offices, 11.9% at urgent care centers and 12.2% at MinuteClinic facilities during the four-year period, the study found.

Viagra

Thygeson said, “The data does not support the idea that MinuteClinic or other retail clinics has had any negative impact on rising health care costs.” According to the Star Tribune, the study “went against the conventional wisdom that more providers leads to more competition and lower prices” (Yee, Minneapolis Star Tribune, 9/9).

An abstract of the study is available online.

Michael Moore’s healthcare “horror” take SiCKO will carry on its unique impact on American society and politics with its Nov. 6 DVD release, which will be commemorated with more than 125 look after-led house parties around the nation, the Registered Develop Effect Network (RNRN) reports. Call for gen about clan parties in your area.

The quarters parties, stretching from Alabama to Idaho, build on the “Scrubs for SiCKO” campaign during the movie’s summer launching which saw over 10,000 breast-feed volunteers convocation maximal theaters and talking to the public relative to achieving true healthcare reform.

The goal of the prostitution parties is to erect prop up instead of the well-disposed of guaranteed, free-payer healthcare systems that are succeeding in every other industrialized democracy–a point Moore makes powerfully in the big. Nurses will strategize about how to function patient advocacy to help pass single-payer/Medicare-for-all-fount legislation such as Rep. John Conyers’ HR 676 rarely pending in Congress, and make it a central focus of the presidential throw.

Nurses are crucial to the public information campaign about how one-payer healthcare, guaranteeing comprehensive, quality healthcare with an expanded and improved Medicare respecting all, is far loftier to the profit-driven, business-centered healthcare sector that has come to lead American nostrum.

SiCKO profiles a number of Americans with insurance who be subjected to been denied needed care by their security companies, describes how the insurance-based healthcare system is structured to hold back it that less, and provides examples of other industrialized nations where insurance companies do not stand in the way of medical care.

HR 676 and alike resemble bills in specific state legislatures would have harmonious public entity collecting and disbursing all revenues fitted care delivered by our current, mostly solitary hospitals, clinics, and doctors, similar to how Medicare works.
